A Coles supermarket customer has been left speechless after noticing that the price on a popular milk buy had increased to almost $10.

Sharing on a well-known Facebook group, the shopper said she was stunned to see that 3L cartons of a2 Milk were now priced at $9.80.

The customer said she noticed the high price when she picked up a carton that had been reduced to just 98c.

But it was only when she took a closer look at the Coles markdown sticker at home, that she took note of the original price.

“Is $9.80 for a2 milk normal?” she asked on the Markdown Addicts Australia Facebook page.

“I recently noticed that the original price on this markdown was $9.80! Surely that’s not the norm?”

It’s believed the a2 Milk Company has recently increased prices on its range due to a several factors.

7NEWS.com.au understands that the a2 Milk Company, its dairy farmers and processors have experienced significant cost pressures across manufacturing, freight, labour and input costs over the past two years.

Specifically, the company’s transport costs have increased with increasing fuel costs – as has the price of packaging due to global supply constraints.

Additional labour has also been put in place to support COVID protocols at processing sites, resulting in higher costs.

It’s understood that the majority of a2’s price increase will go towards the rising farm gate price, with the company remaining committed to offering consumers unique products while ensuring that its farmers and processors are also supported financially.

Responding to the Coles shopper’s Facebook post, many shoppers said they had noticed the price hike.

“Yep, they just increased by 10 per cent couple weeks ago. The 2L used to be $6 and now is $6.60,” said one.

Another added: “I have moved from fresh milk to UHT milk as I can’t afford the fresh. It sucks, like cheese is $11 now. It’s crazy.”

A third wrote: “Been like that for several months, used to drink it until prices rises massively on it.”

Said one more: “Yep, A2 is 9.80. That’s all I can stomach.”
