The Punjab pollution control board (PPCB) has asked dairy owners here to stop illegal discharge of effluents and dumping of cow dung waste into the Kala Sanghian drain. The drain flows into Chitti Bein, which further merges with Satluj river.

PPCB member secretary Karuneh Garg told dairy owners to treat/reuse or make legal disposal arrangements for effluents within 30 days or face closure. They were also told to manage cow dung waste.

In the hearing on Tuesday, chief environment engineer GS Majithia and senior environment engineer Sandeep Behl represented the PPCB. Some of the dairy owners did not attend the proceedings. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) had directed the authorities concerned to ensure that diary effluents didn’t end up in drains.
