Goa Dairy has announced a hike of Rs 3-5 per litre of milk starting Saturday. This is the second hike within eight months. The previous hike took affect from May 1, last year.
Goa Dairy’s managing director Yogesh Rane, through a circular released on Friday, confirmed that all variants of its brand would be costlier by Rs 3-5 from Saturday.
The Goa State Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union, the state’s apex milk union popularly known as Goa Dairy, said it is an attempt to bring milk rates on par with other players in the Goan market.
With the price hike, a 500ml packet of Shakti (standardised milk) will be sold at Rs 29 from Saturday. The previous price was Rs 27. Likewise, cow milk packet will be sold at Rs 27 per 500ml instead of Rs 25. After a hike of Rs 5, a litre of full cream milk will go up to Rs 67 from Rs 62.
The dairy has added a new pack Cold Gold (toned milk) at Rs 51 per litre. The earlier pack of 450ml has been replaced with a new pack of 475ml for Rs 25.
The hike was actually proposed at a meeting of the board of directors on December 30, 2022. However, the board members deferred the implementation of the hike immediately. The directors suggested conducting a market study before implementation of the hike.
While revising the selling rate, the dairy will also revise the milk procurement rates to facilitate the mulching farmers and promote the milk production in state, Rane said.
The dairy has been considering a price hike after dairy chairman Rajesh Faldessai hinted in November last year it would be a means to tide over the losses incurred by its cattle feed plant at Usgao.
