With 1 million users within the first week of launch, Chat GPT has taken the world by storm, using open AI and a natural language to generate human-like text and creating content on everything from business to personal relationships, from academics to management. Can Chat GPT become a valuable resource for farming and food production?

First, though, it’s important to clarify a little about Chat GPT. The key innovation in Chat GPT (and its competitors) is that it converts huge amounts of information into more user-friendly forms. For example, if you want to write a training document you might request a “training document for the X Milking Machine 2000’, and ChatGPT scrubs the internet, pulls together all the relevant information it can find, and produces a document. Pros: you have this at the touch of a button, written in a fairly readable format, reflecting all the information that it found. Cons: it may be more or less technical than you wanted, and if the information is restricted (paywall or password protected) you may be missing some key information and not know it. That leads to a key limitation of ChatGPT: the analytical skills are variable, and in particular it is not a tool for data analysis. On the other hand, there are data analytical tools that work with ChatGPT so that your data can be analyzed and then summarized in normal text.

With those benefits and limitations in mind, here are six possible uses for ChatGPT on a dairy farm:

1️) Enhancing cow health monitoring: Dairy farmers could leverage ChatGPT to summarize and use data collected from various sensors in the barn. Today both wearable sensors on cows and smart cameras generate data from close to 20 million cows globally. In addition, the use of real-time sensors in the milking equipment can generate real-time information on milk quality and other biomarkers of cow health. Paired with analytic software Chat GPT can give you a clear report on the health and well-being of your animals, identifying potential issues sooner and leading to better care and improved milk production.

2️) Optimizing feed and nutrition: ChatGPT can assist dairy farmers in formulating the best feed for their cows. By providing information about the cows’ breed, age, weight, body condition and milk production, the model can generate customized feeding plans that ensure optimal nutrition. The use of sensors on the mixers, real-time laboratory analysis, determines the nutritional value of feed ingredients, moisture content and the presence of toxins. Precision nutrition leads to healthier cows, increased milk quality, and reduced costs for farmers.

3️) Streamlining farm management: Considering all of the tasks of running a dairy farm, from scheduling milking sessions to monitoring equipment maintenance, ChatGPT can act as a virtual assistant, helping farmers organize daily operations more efficiently. By answering questions quickly, providing reminders, and offering suggestions, the model can save farmers and farm managers valuable time and improve overall productivity. The benefits of ChatGPT to eliminate ‘middle management’ have already been explored in other businesses, why not get those benefits for your farm?

4️) Enhancing customer communication: ChatGPT can improve communication between dairy farmers and their customers. By generating informative and engaging content, such as blog posts or social media updates, the model can help farmers educate consumers about sustainable farming practices, animal welfare, and the nutritional benefits of dairy products.

5) Identifying and writing grant proposals. Applying for grants or subsidies is time-consuming, requiring reports requiring a lot of published facts and figures, condensed into a standardized report- which is an important part of funding growth and development. This is an ideal application for ChatGPT. As the requirement for farms to report information on their carbon footprint, animal welfare, sustainability or ESG grows, they can all be done better and faster by generative AI systems than by humans.

Since the evaluators could also be using AI to evaluate farm plans and proposals, the speed of the process will be increased exponentially, as AI systems talk directly to other AI systems.

6) Managing markets, and maximizing profits.

ChatGPT can help farmers make decisions in the marketplace, from feed inputs to milk contracts, with better decision-making on the right and wrong time to lock in futures, or when to make a sale. While many still enjoy decisions based on their ‘gut feeling’ the power of AI-informed decision-making and timing suggests these are better made by a good information AI system.

It’s important to note that while ChatGPT holds great potential, it is essentially a tool to assist dairy farmers, rather than replace their expertise. The human touch and experience of farmers remain invaluable in ensuring the well-being of their cows and the success of their operations.

As technology continues to advance, it’s exciting to witness how dairy farmers are embracing innovative solutions like ChatGPT to enhance their practices. By leveraging data from multiple digital devices and AI, you can improve cow health, optimize nutrition, streamline management, and foster better communication with consumers.
