Milking and breeding competitions were held in the three-day dairy and agri expo which started from Friday.

Talking to TOI, Poras Mehla and Samrat Singh of Kurukshetra in Haryana said that their seven-year-old HF cow gave 72.390 kilograms milk in 24 hours in the adult cow milking competition. This is the highest yield for such a cow in any competition in India. They added that the previous high yield was 70.400 kilograms milk per day for HF cow at the PDFA competition in 2018.

“It is a great feeling that our cow has set a national record in such a prestigious competition. This is the first time that it participated in such a competition. A total of 30 HF cows from various states were competing in the category. As our cow won the competition, we will be getting a tractor as prize,” said the proud dairy farmers. They also appreciated the Dairy Farmers Association Haryana for promoting dairy culture in the state.

Poras Mehla said that he did MBA in Gurgaon and later joined an MNC, which he left to join the 40-year-old dairy farming business. He added that dairy farming was a passion, not just a business and only those who loved cattle could be successful.

Samrat Singh said that besides monitoring things themselves, they have 10 to 15 persons working at their farm in two shifts. He said that they took care of cows from 4am to 7pm and added that they had 200 HF and Jersey cows.

Meanwhile, a Jersey cow owned by a dairy farmer from Noorpura Hakima in Moga won the the first prize in milk yield in such category. Onkar Arwind, who aspires to become a veterinary doctor, said that their Jersey cow’s yield per day was 44.505 kilograms and it won the first prize. He added that in previous competitions, it had produced around 47.5 kilograms milk.

Onkar also said that their HF cow won the second prize in milk production in the adult category by producing 68.400 kilograms in the competition. He added that their cows, which produced much higher yield, could not yield as much in the competition due to issues with fodder and weather.
